Knit Wit

P2230047

It was the winter of 2001 in Oxford, England. As students of Stanford's Oxford campus we would scurry between tutorials, Shakespeare classes and Sainsbury's in the chilly winter air before hustling back home by 4 p.m. for Pat McAvoy's famous Tea in the JCR. What goes better with a wintry afternoon, a cup of tea and a warm common room? Knitting. I'm one of the many who learned to knit and purl under Pat's patient and watchful eye. Many of us came home with hats, scarves and other souvenirs of our brief careers as knitters, but Emily Williams came back with a vocation.

In 2007, Williams and her business partner opened Twisted, Portland's hippest yarn and craft store. I haven't had a chance to check out their wares myself yet, but the next time I'm in Portland I'll be sure to find a reason to knit another hat. My profile of Emily is in this month's issue of Stanford Magazine.
